PARZIVAL - International storytelling symposium

PTUJ, SLOVENIA 14–21 July 2013

The epic poem about Parzival—who is on a painful journey from utter ignorance and naïveté to spiritual awareness to become the King of the Grail—is a masterpiece of Medieval Europe and is of outstanding importance for all of humanity.

Storytelling has always been about turning to our roots for sustenance and imagining a future filled with feeling, inspired tales, and deep conversation. This is the essence of our symposium.

The story of Parzival will be told daily in English, Slovenian, and German in different locations

Why Slovenia?

The town of Ptuj and the country of Slovenia
uniquely represent the heart of this myth to the world.

parzivalPARZIVAL

Parzival, who is eager to become a knight, leaves his forest home, in which he has led a sheltered life. He visits King Arthur’s court, but is judged too inexperienced to become a knight of the Round Table. Later, after many adventures, he is granted knighthood. When he visits the ailing King of the Grail, however, he fails to ask the one question that will release the old man from his suffering: the reason behind his illness. For his ignorance, Parzival is punished with a curse, and in turn he curses God, whom he believes has turned against him. When he meets an old hermit that helps him realize the true nature of God, Parzival reaches a turning point in his spiritual education. He returns to the King of the Grail and now, having gained wisdom, performs his duties correctly. He is rewarded with the title and duties of the keeper of the Grail. Wolfram von Eschenbach’s epic poem in Middle High German, consisting of 24,600 lines, was written in the first decades of the thirteenth century and is the most important work of that time after Dante’s Divine Comedy.
In addition to the aesthetic value of Eschenbach’s renowned work, we highlight the poem’s historical and geographical connections with Slovenia and examine the basic spiritual dimensions that flow from this medieval spiritual well. Sentimental mysticism on the one hand, and cynical intellectualism on the other, prevent people today from understanding the substance of the motifs of the Holy Grail, the Knights of the Round Table, spiritual growth, and the nonmaterial, nonphysical content that expresses the meaning of human existence. The story of Parzival especially emphasizes this all-too-often ignored basic human perspective, which we will reveal.

STORYTELLING

Storytelling has always been about turning to our roots for sustenance and imagining a future full of feeling, inspired tales, and deep conversation. This is the essence of our symposium.

Come to a place where the screens are switched off and where everyone is invited: teachers, those that care for others, young and old, troubadours and storytellers all. Come let us listen, tell tales, sing, and be well together. Let the grail of the myth be part of your story as we share this extraordinary tale and take time to reflect on the magic and healing that shines through active listening and inspired storytelling—whether it be in a school, inn, or theater, outdoors, or in a castle.

Welcome to this unique symposium on Parzival!

The story of Parzival will be told daily in English, Slovenian, and German. There will be workshops on storytelling skills, voice work, movement, and harp-playing for storytellers. It will strengthen your understanding of the story, teach you how to work with Parzival in education, and much more!
